Fashion Genres Come to V&A Museum

Today I put a dot in the most important part of my essay paper and now, I think, I can afford a few hours of blissful lazy time. Masters thesis writing waits for me and will be waiting further. In fact I found an interesting display in V&A Museum and want to talk about its main conception. The role of fashion in the history of culture is ambiguous. It dictated regulations and proprieties, changed and sometimes ruined people’s lives, gave and took away money. Nowadays it is still the same: fashion business and life rather remind of Russian roulette. It is a game, which combines luck and skills, and mostly – taste. It is a controversial kind of Art which is used for various purposes. One of them is to accentuate and improve appearance, to highlight beauty of a human being. The other appeared thanks to the human aspiration for extremes. Those, who were mad about fashion inspired graphic satirist to use fashionable things as a mean to depict human and social foibles and drawbacks . The display in V&A exhibits the dialogue between fashion admirers and satirists from the 1770 to these days. The entrance is free, and the displays will be exhibited until the January 2011. It was very interesting to watch the products of the long lasting confrontation between two fashion genres. Still, my main conclusion was as classical as it could be: happy medium is the best principle in every sphere of life.
